Pending City of Sturgeon Bay Local Historic Designation
Excerpt from a National Register review questionnaire by City staff: “The Ahnapee depot building is one of the few remaining buildings associated with the railroad in Sturgeon Bay. It is arguable the most important building that was constructed for the railroad since it was used by the public and is very visible due to its location along a major street of the city. Like most communities, Sturgeon Bay depend greatly on the railroad for its transportation needs and it helped fuel the city’s economy, particularly fruit & vegetable processing and shipbuilding. The depot building thus represents a bygone era of the city.”
On April 2, 2025, the City of Sturgeon Bay’s Historic Preservation Commission unanimously recommended the Ahnapee & Western Railroad Passenger Depot for local historic designation. On June 3, 2025 the City of Sturgeon Bay’s common council voted to table Historic Preservation Commission’s recommendation during a 4-1 vote. The status of the City’s Common Council to revisit the recommendation is uncertain.
W. C. Schroeder collection, taken in 1945, shows German POWs disembarking at the depot.
